As the postal service developed so areas were coded and streets became more regimented. Town and cities dwellers were able to move outside the crowded confines of the centres and new suburbs sprung up making some towns and most cities expand at a fast rate and therefore changing street names and often house numbering and enabling central slum areas to be pulled down. With the arrival of the railway it was possible for rural communities to work outside of the village without moving their home. It all helps to build the picture of how your ancestors lived. It is therefore useful to pinpoint the area on a map and get to know the streets that your ancestors would have known and the local industry (and the local public house!). Until the arrival of the railway they mostly were in walking distance of their jobs. Early on families often stayed close to each other, although sometimes moved area for work opportunities. ![]() The census will give you an address to start with.
